Movie Review: Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning - Part One

For nearly three decades since taking on the role of secret agent Ethan Hunt, Tom Cruise has campaigned and ridden on the action movie scene without skipping a beat -  showing just why he's one of Hollywood's most ambitious and charismatic stars to this day. With 1996's "Mission: Impossible" - he changed the rules of the IMF game and became the franchise's de facto lead, with each instalment constantly pushing the envelope and putting Ethan and his team in death defying world saving situations that would put any man through hell just to get out of it alive. He mostly comes out of each iteration unscathed and saves the day without fail, but all of that gets tested to the fullest with "Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning - Part One" - the seventh installment in the Mission: Impossible film series that serves as the first of a two part event that will serve at the biggest adventure the Impossible Mission Force has faced yet.

Thanks to Paramount Pictures Philippines, UIP Movies PH, and SM Cinema, I got to see the film last week - and of course being a Tom Cruise film it opens strong and has a LOT of practical effects and stunt work that will always impress those looking for no-brainer action flicks that will leave them at the edge of their seats.

Here's my thoughts on "Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning - Part One". Naturally SPOILER ALERT, so read at your own risk... Should you choose to accept it!

In Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team embark on their most dangerous mission yet: To track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity before it falls into the wrong hands. With control of the future and the fate of the world at stake, and dark forces from Ethan's past closing in, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than his mission – not even the lives of those he cares about most.

Once again teaming up witth director Christopher McQuarrie and reuniting with co-stars Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and Rebecca Ferguson, Tom Cruise doesn't hold back in his latest Mission: Impossible movie that raises the stakes and adds more death defying stunts that literally push the franchise to an all-time high. New faces joining the franchise for the very first time include Hayley Atwell, who plays Ethan's new ally and expert burglar Grace, as well as Pom Klementieff as the French assassin Paris. Rhames, Pegg, and Ferguson all return as Ethan Hunt's allies Luther Stickwell, Benji Dunn, and Ilsa Faustt, and Vanessa Kirby also reprises her role as the White Widow Alanna Mitsopolis.

Then we have the big bad in Gabriel played by Esai Morales, who is a terrorist who is aiming to use an all-powerful AI known as The Entity for global domination. His background and relationship with Ethan stems from a shared past prior to IMF, and that brings a new kind of conflict to the story that adds more complications to Hunt's mission. Also returning from the very first Mission: Impossible film is Henry Czerny, who reprises his role as Eugene Kittridge - the director of IMF and the CIA who once again butts heads with Mr. Hunt.

As with all Mission: Impossible films, it's all about the stunts, intense action, and practical effects - and M:I 7 delivers the motherload with that. From an intense car chase scene in Italy to action packed fights in Venice, and then an insane Train sequence that ends with a big crash and bang somewhere in Austria, you'll get more bank for your buck here and Tom Cruise and team don't scrimp on it one bit.

As it is just the first part of two film storyline that will continue next year, M:I 7 will definitely get audiences cheering, gasping, and trying to make sense of all the insanity happening before them as Tom Cruise and his team deliver another solid mission for the big screen. It absolutely has to be seen on the best format you can watch it on, and IMAX delivers that experience tenfold. I can't wait to see the continuation to this story with with "Dead Reckoning - Part Two" in 2024.

Rating - 5/5
