Vin Diesel and his family of co-stars are back, and they are ready to lead one of the most insane and long running blockbuster franchises to the finish line by unleashing a new story arc that will culminate the Fast Saga in a big way. That final lap begins with the release of "Fast X" - the 10th mainline installment in the "Fast and Furious" movie series that sees Dominic Toretto and his family taking on a new enemy in the form of Aquaman actor Jason Momoa. It's not your run-of-the-mill typical bad guy either, as Momoa plays a man known as Dante Reyes who has legitimate reason to hate Toretto and seek revenge based on an event that played out in a previous Fast Saga installment.
Thanks to the folks at Universal Pictures Philippines, Warner Bros. Philippines, and SM Cinema, I got to be among the first viewers to watch "Fast X" ahead of the entire world during its Philippine premiere on IMAX SM Megamall! Of course with that red carpet came some hype and excitement to see the next instalment of former criminals and racers using the power of "FAMILY" to beat the odds, but it was also great to see my friend and Jason Momoa lookalike Aqua Blake take it in and look the part of the bad guy!
Here's my review of Fast X, and naturally Spoiler Warning for those who want to see it first hand!
Set a few years after the events of F9, Fast X is actually the first of a intended two-part finale that sees the past come back to haunt Dominic Toretto and his team in a big way. Dante Reyes, the son of the late Fast and Furious 5 villain Hernan Reyes, is seeking revenge for the death of his father and is on a mission to make sure that his enemies suffer before he eliminates them completely. Systematically eliminating competition and turning allies and assets against them, Toretto and his allies are left with their back against the wall. With everyone he cares for and his own son's life at stake, it'll take all the skills and resources Dom and his team have to get out of this predicament other than believing in the power of family.
As a franchise that has gone above and beyond just racing cars and pulling heists, everything about Fast X defies logic and is made solely to take any common sense out of the window for pure blockbuster enjoyment... And that's actually a good thing for those who want to sit back and watch a popcorn action flick with big names and personalities starring in it. Vin Diesel recruits the usual crew back into the fold, with Michelle Rodriguez, Tyreese Gibson, Ludacris, Nathalie Emmanuel, Sung Kang, and Jordana Brewster back as his family. Even John Cena returns from F9 as his formerly estranged brother Jakob, and joining them in this instalment aside from the insane and talented Jason Momoa is Brie Larson as Mr. Nobody's daughter Tess and Alan Ritchson as Aimes. It's a jam packed cast and crew, and there's also some cameos and surprise appearances that fans will want to watch out for through the entire film.
If there's anything that will take away the fun from Fast X (besides the impossible feats and stunts that go beyond realism), it's that this two hour and twenty minute adventure ends in a cliffhanger. Basically it's the "Avengers: Infinity War" of the saga's finale, and we'll just have to be patient until we see the finish line happen OR extend depending on what Diesel and director Louis Leterrier decide for the franchise. Again, it's a no brainer action packed flick, so enjoy it for its high-octane action and blockbuster output! The filmmakers embraced crazy and it delivers it in spades with Jason Momoa proving a formidable and unpredictable villain! It's worth seeing on IMAX
