After five years of laying dormant and biding time for the big smackdown promised at the end of the first film - the king has FINALLY returned to take on monsters that would dare oppose his rule as Warner Bros. Pictures, Legendary, and Toho team up once again to bring back Godzilla and expand the Monsterverse with "Godzilla: King of the Monsters". The long awaited sequel to the 2014 Godzilla film is nothing short of a welcome sight and is pretty much a triumphant roar that fans of the iconic Japanese giant monster can bring out when they walk into this film. It is BIGGER, BETTER, and MUCH MORE EPIC compared to its predecessor by unleashing the rest of the "Titans" on our planet, bringing forth one of the most awaited confrontations in this saga that will test the Big G as he asserts his rule as one of the most dominant creatures Earth has ever witnessed.
Thanks to the folks at Warner Bros. Philippines, I got to watch Godzilla's long awaited comeback in the big screen (and on IMAX 3D no less), and all I can tell you before moving on to the review proper is that it's the BIG BLOCKBUSTER MONSTER MOVIE that I have waited for since the 2014 Hollywood reboot and sets things up for the inevitable clash "Gojira" will have against Kong next year! We FINALLY get to see the long awaited debuts of Mothra, Rodan, and Godzilla's ultimate nemesis King Ghidorah in this film - so there is no shortage of Kaiju/ Monster action in the sequel! As Godzilla celebrates his 65th anniversary this year, prepare to be wowed and in awe for what this sequel five years in the making brings following "Godzilla" and "Kong: Skull Island"!
As the title implies, Godzilla: King of the Monsters is all about showing why the giant monster of the same name is the one to rule them all. After appearing in the 2014 film and giving the public its first clear look at the rise of the ancient beasts known as "Titans", the world and its governments have put more efforts to understand these creatures as well as the actions of the secret crypto-zoological organization known as "Monarch". However the rise of these legendary beasts may come sooner than expected as a paleobiologist and a group of eco-terrorists mercenaries enact their plans to summon these beings to "restore balance to the planet" - unwittingly unleashing forces beyond their understanding and comprehension. This catches the attention of Godzilla, as an ancient rivalry with another alpha reignites to determine who will be "King of the Monsters".
Starring a very well rounded cast that Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, and Charles Dance, Godzilla: King of Monsters has a good balance of characters and interactions that should keep people invested in the human element - but thankfully more emphasis is given to the monsters themselves and the fights and destruction they carve in their paths. Special mention goes out to Ken Watanabe who reprises his role as Dr. Ishiro Serizawa, who's performance and connection to the Big G in this film cannot be overstated. All of these players and their relations to the titans and Monarch are expanded upon. And of course who can forget about the "Titans" and Godzilla himself? They are all fearsome monsters to behold and see in action - ESPECIALLY King Ghidorah - who's three headed and electrifying presence shows why he is and always will be Godzilla's number one nemesis.
If there was ever a Godzilla movie that gave us exactly what we wanted and delivered on its promise to be better than its predecessor, Godzilla: King of the Monsters is that film and a whole lot more. It expands on the Monsterverse cinematic universe tenfold, and gives us memorable confrontations and battles that will not only test Gojira - but shake the entire planet to its core. As a longtime fan of the Big G, I can confidently say that this is one of my favorite films in the franchise, and it's great to see Hollywood finally crack the formula and deliver on its promise as we look forward to the next entry in "Godzilla vs Kong" next year.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters is now showing in theaters c/o Warner Bros. Philippines.
Rating - 5/5
