It's been three years since fans returned to the island of Isla Nublar and saw a theme park with dinosaurs realized anew with "Jurassic World" - but like its predecessor "Jurassic Park" two decades ago, something amiss happens that causes any concept of controlling dinosaurs to be overruled and the human made attraction piece destroyed in the process. It took guts to retell Steven Spielberg's in a brand new film series that reignited interest in the franchise, but the 2015 was very successful and sequels were definitely going to happen as a result of that success.
Fast forward to 2018, and Spanish director J.A. Bayona takes over from fellow director Colin Trevorrow in continuing the story with the new follow-up called "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" - set exactly three years after the events of "Jurassic World" and seeing fans revisit the dinosaur inhabited island one last time as it faces the threat of destruction through volcanic eruption. Familiar faces return in Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, and even a cameo by veteran Jurassic Park movie star Jeff Goldblum - who reprises his role as Dr. Ian Malcolm. Naturally, there's more to just saving the dinosaurs and getting them off an island - as those with hidden agendas act on their own interests once again that sets up a formula for chaos and destruction because of man's own hubris and selfishness.
Thanks to UIP Philippines and Columbia Pictures Philippines, I got to see the film in IMAX 3D and it was simply another breathtaking experience to see all the dinosaurs in action - from the Tyrannosaurus Rex to Blue the Velociraptor! Much like its predecessors, Jurassic World falls on the category of giving viewers and dinosaur fans a chance to see these creatures brought to back life in the big screen millions of years after they became extinct. Does it hold up to its promise of bigger and better? Check out the review below!
From the get go, Jurassic World follows the aftermath of the previous film's plot - the amusement park abandoned yet other sinister forces looking to pick up the pieces of precious Dinosaur genetic material for their own gain. When a volcanic eruption threatens the island and its prehistoric inhabitants, a team is sent to retrieve and save these creatures with survivors Owen Grady and Claire Dearing brought back to help in the salvage operation of the place they used to work in. What they don't know is that there are figures looking to cash in and make more out of science gone amok, as history repeats itself yet again as a new chapter in the Jurassic Park saga opens its doors.
As an action adventure film following in the footsteps of its predecessors, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom does little to elevate the basic premise - man makes dinosaurs, dinosaurs go loose and start destroying things, and a couple of heroic men and women try to correct things and save the day while trying to survive at the same time. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard have comfortably settled back into their roles as Owen and Claire, and of course there's the introduction of new bad guys led by a greedy corporate man who wants to sell the dinosaurs as weapons with help from returning corrupt geneticist B.D. Wong. While Jeff Goldblum doesn't get into the action here, it's nice to see Ian Malcolm back in the Jurassic Park/ Jurassic World universe again giving some key insight that reflects into the narrative of the story.
While it certainly isn't elevating in the grandest sense, Jurassic World does propel the Jurassic Park saga to new heights thanks to what happens through the course of the story. Any dinosaur fan or Jurassic Park follower needs to see this film just for the effects and the way they create and bring these creatures to life 25 years after the release of the original Jurassic Park, this is still that spectacle and life does find a way to survive.
Jurassic World is now showing in theaters c/o UIP Philippines and Columbia Pictures PH.
Rating - 4/5
