I enjoyed the first two Hangover movies, and despite being inane and moronic at times, it was hilarious to see the unfortunate group that is "The Wolfpack" get into all kinds of trouble. Director Todd Philipps carved out a sleeper comedy hit with "The Hangover" in 2009, and returned for mayhem in Bangkok in "The Hangover Part II" in 2011. Now that a third installment, "The Hangover Part III" has stepped into the picture, what could possibly happen to Phil, Stew, Doug, and their special friend and Wolfpack brother Allen? All kinds of things from the looks of the trailer alone, and this final installment in "The Hangover Trilogy" takes the group to numerous locations and back to where it all began... Las Vegas.
Special Thanks again goes to Warner Bros. Philippines and Ayala Cinemas for the special screening a few days prior to this review. That being said, it's time to speak on "The End"... aka The Hangover Part III.
The Hangover Part III
Directed By: Todd Phillips
Release Date: May 23 (U.S), May 29 (RP)
Two years after the last movie, The Hangover Part III puts The Wolfpack in their most dangerous predicament yet. Phil, Stew, and Doug take it upon themselves to help their "troubled friend" Allen, who's disturbing behavior and lack of medication forces his loved ones to "seek proper help" for the 40 year old plus kid-in-an-adult's body after a highway incident causes his family embarrassment and the unintentional death of his father. Once they hit the road to bring Allen to an institution, trouble rears its ugly head when a certain mob boss named Marshall kidnaps the group and takes Doug hostage. His demand? Find a certain Mr. Leslie Chow - who has escaped imprisonment in Bangkok and has Marshall's stolen gold to boot. With time running out and their situation bringing back shreds of their forgettable past experiences, The Wolfpack must work together to find Chow, get Doug back alive, and prevent any more mishaps from happening ever again.
Returning stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Ken Jeong, and Justin Bartha reprise their signature roles as Phil, Stew, Allen, Leslie Chow, and Doug in The Hangover Part III, and despite the four years since they first took those parts, they don't skip a beat and remain true to their characters throughout the film. The core trio of The Wolfpack in particular is the highlight in this film, as is their interactions with Ken Jeong's Mr. Chow, who's up to his insane and crazy schemes once more to get more "Chow" out of life. Adding fuel to the fire is Marshall, the villainous mob boss played by veteran actor John Goodman. He's the kind of guy you don't want to mess around with, and he's having a bad day because of Mr. Chow... Who stole his loot and makes The Wolfpack do his dirty work to get it back because of their "special relationship" with Chow. All in all, you'll be seeing these guys play a game of cat and mouse to make things right, and during the trip you'll be seeing familiar locales and supporting characters that brings a sense of nostalgia to fans of the series and closure in many ways to the series as a whole.
In terms of packing laughs and stupidity, The Hangover Part III does its best to wrap up things clean and bring things full circle for the franchise. While it's not the strongest entry in the series, it has its moments and will certainly get people laughing regardless of some odd and idiotic moments from the start, no thanks in part to Allen's "condition" and Chow's "attitude" of course, but that's part of the allure of the series. Despite it's weak spots, overall its definitely something that fans who've seen Part I and II need to see. It's "The End" of everything, and the Wolfpack ends their run with a bang... Literally.
