Movie Review: Wreck-It Ralph

Disney has been part of our childhood in one form or another, and none more so when it comes to their animated films, which have captured the hearts of minds of viewers around the world. Whether it be a 2D animated retelling of a fairy tale or one of Pixar's wonderful 3D stories, the House of Mickey has chugged some of the best the entertainment and film industry has to offer. Having recently purchased LucasFilm and already having Marvel under their wing, Walt Disney Studios is certainly a strong brand, and it's about to get bigger with the gaming market too, thanks to their new animated feature - Wreck-It Ralph! I recently got to see a "Sneak Peek" screening of the film thanks to Walt Disney Studios Philippines, and it certainly lives up to the promise of it being what it is - A love letter to Video Game fans and kids out there!

Movie: Wreck-It Ralph

Release Date: November 1, 2012

Starring: John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch

Directed By: Rich Moore

As the 52nd Animated Feature in the Walt Disney Animated Classics library, Wreck-It Ralph tells the story of the eponymous video game villain character of the same name, who's tired of playing the bad guy and dreams to become a hero. Set in a rich and lush video game world ripe with nostalgia and nods to several classic arcade titles and video game franchises, Ralph feels trapped in an endless cycle playing the villain in the game Fix-It Felix Jr. for 30 years. Tired of the routine, he sets out on a journey to prove that he can be the good guy for once, exploring other game universes and meeting other characters to prove he's hero material. Unfortunately, Ralph's actions inadvertently spark problems that have severe consequences for the gaming universe. Determined to set things right, Ralph will discover that being a bad guy doesn't necessarily mean you're not good either.

Wreck-It Ralph Trailer

As a Halloween season treat that's certainly given me a good mix of gooebumps and nostalgia, Wreck-It Ralph might possibly be the BEST Video Game Movie I've ever seen, if not one of my favorite Disney movies of all time. It's chalk full of stuff that not only extend to classic video game francises, but materials from various food products and merchandise. Those who love the old school 8-bit games of old will be thrilled at the wonderful animation and detail that Disney Animation has put into Wreck-It Ralph, and will be dazzled by surprise cameo appearances of various characters from well known games like Super Mario Bros, Sonic The Hedgehog, Pac-Man, Street Fighter, and even Q*Bert!

This movie's full of so much references, and even those who know certain brands like Oreo, Mentos, and Dunkin' Donuts will be astounded by the product placement nods placed throughout the movie, from the real-world arcade highlighting dozens of kids playing games with junk food to the nicks and crannies that make up the sweet and dazzling gaming worlds like Sugar Rush. There's so much content here that'll make a nostalgic gamer's heart explode, and from the sound bits and voices to the old fashioned Konami code, I can personally tell you that this is an animated feature that's made with lots of TLC!

Programmed to be a exciting adventure for gamers at heart and those who enjoy anything retro or pixelated, Wreck-It Ralph is truly a must see film for kids and adults alike. You'll definitely fall in love with the unique characters of Ralph, Felix, Vaneloppe, and Sergeant Calhoun, and it's a unique family experience that will make you believe that anyone can be a hero... Even a big guy who's a bad guy by design. So give yourself a Halloween treat, and be sure to catch it in theaters when it opens on November 1st, presented by Walt Disney Studios! It's definitely one of the best films of the year, 'nuff said!

Rating - 5/5
